Introduction
US-based company Cognition Lab has introduced the world’s first AI software engineer called Devin.
A few weeks ago, at the World Government Summit in Dubai, Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, suggested that coding might no longer be a viable career option for young people. While many initially doubted this claim, believing AI wasn’t advanced enough, the introduction of Devin, the first AI Engineer, has sparked concerns within software development communities.
Huang suggested that we should focus more on biology, education, manufacturing, or farming instead. The CEO also said that learning new skills could help some people in coding stay important because they’ll know a lot about AI programming.
According to Jensen Huang:
It is our job to create computing technology such that nobody has to program. And that the programming language is human, everybody in the world is now a programmer. This is the miracle of artificial intelligence.
Devin AI Capabilities
According to its CEO Scott Wu, Devin AI is designed to work tirelessly alongside human engineers or independently complete tasks for them to review. Its capabilities include long-term reasoning and planning, allowing it to plan and execute complex engineering tasks, recall relevant context, learn over time, and fix mistakes.
Devin is equipped with common developer tools and can actively collaborate with users by reporting progress in real time, accepting feedback, and working together on design choices.
Some tasks Devin can perform include learning unfamiliar technologies, building and deploying apps, finding and fixing bugs, training AI models, addressing bugs and feature requests in open-source repositories, and contributing to mature production repositories.

How does Devin Perform compared to their peer?
On the SWE-bench benchmark, Devin outperformed previous models by correctly resolving a significantly higher percentage of real-world GitHub issues, demonstrating its superior performance and capabilities. The creator claims Devin can solve 13.86%* problems all by itself, which is much better than the older technology that could only solve about 1.96%. Even when Devin is told exactly which files to work on, it can still fix 4.80% of the problems.

After watching the teaser the first question software engineer communities asking, Will Devin AI replace software engineers? And the answer depends on what Davin can do and what it can’t. Some experts think Devin, the AI software engineer, might struggle with tough tasks, complex users’ requirements, or those needing human creativity. But expert also worries it could lead to job losses where requirements are very monotonous. Some other experts see Devin as a helper for many engineers, creating new ways for humans and AI to work together.
The company behind Devin is Cognition, led by Scott Wu. They focus on AI and say they’re making teammates for engineers that are better than other AI tools. They say making Devin is just the beginning, and they’re working on more challenges. Right now, companies have to sign up to use Devin, but soon it will be available for hire.
